Lisa, why are consumer insights important?
I’ve always been a ‘why’ person, and we can often use consumer insights and market research to get to those answers. Knowledge is power – getting closer to the end user’s mindset, behaviors, needs and wants allows us to be smarter in talking with our customers, anticipating their needs and forging shared successes in the industry.

It’s only through uncovering these consumer and customer ‘truths’ that a company can bring meaningful innovation to market – be it new products, or services.  We need to be able to uncover consumer pain points and workarounds in order to innovate and solve them.

What changes should we be watching out for?
Once viewed as stagnant, the mattress industry is now experiencing significant disruption:

  • Digital giants like Amazon are entering the mattress market and taking share very quickly (estimated to be running at an annual rate of $2 billion)
  • Leading mattress retailer Mattress Firm is undergoing a restructure
  • Spring coils manufacturer Leggett & Platt  has acquired foam manufacturer Elite Comfort Solutions – showing that even major spring manufacturers are recognizing the importance of foam
